Winmail Reader

Winmail Reader

Open, View, and Extract Winmail.dat Attachments Instantly on Mac and iOS.

4.5

Receiving a mysterious winmail.dat attachment instead of a readable email is a common frustration for Apple users communicating with Microsoft Outlook or Exchange senders. Winmail Reader solves this instantly — decoding TNEF files natively on macOS, iPhone, and iPad, restoring the original rich-text message, and extracting all embedded attachments, calendar events, and contacts in one tap. Everything runs entirely on-device with no internet connection required.

Key Features

Instant Winmail.dat Decoding

Opens and decodes winmail.dat, winmail, and ATT00001.dat TNEF-encoded files — listing all embedded attachments including email message body, documents, images, and calendar items.

High-Fidelity Message Viewer

Renders the sender's original email message with full support for HTML, RTF, and plain text — including nested messages read in full RTF format as separate files.

One-Click Attachment Extraction

Save individual or all extracted attachments to any destination in one click. Drag and drop directly from the file list to Finder, or copy-paste attachments to any location.

Resend Decoded Email

Resend the entire decoded email as-is — with the reconstructed message body and all extracted attachments — directly from macOS or iOS without any manual reassembly.

Calendar & Contact Integration

Automatically creates and adds Microsoft Outlook appointments, meeting requests, and reminders to Apple Calendar. Adds contact address cards directly to macOS or iOS Contacts.

Batch Winmail Extractor

On macOS, use the built-in Winmail Extractor to batch-process multiple winmail.dat files simultaneously — extracting all attachments to your Downloads folder in one pass.

Advanced TNEF Decoding

Supports nested TNEF attachments, embedded OLE object extraction, Sticky Notes, Recall, Activity, Post, and multiple Contacts list message class attributes — the most complete TNEF decoder on Mac.

Standalone & Fully Private

No Microsoft Outlook, Exchange Server access, or internet connection required. All decoding and extraction runs entirely on-device — your private communications never leave your Mac or iPhone.

Worth every penny

I tried a couple of “free” readers only to find it would cost me hundreds of pounds to read the amount of files I needed to. This one is so simple to use and a one off cost which is so inexpensive compared to the “free” readers I tried. I can’t recommend this app enough, so easy to use and exceptional value for money. I really hope you’re convinced because you won’t regret it if you buy it!

(i dunnow what the much more expensive tools do, maye they read it out loud or get your work done.. - -this is perfect)

Great App

I love it when an app does exactly what is promised and no features are locked out requiring further in app purchases (often at quite an expense). The app works seamlessly and is stable. I love how easily windows mail attachments are opened. Exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks!

Ridiculously good & easy!

I read the one previous reviewer who said it took literally 5 seconds from purchasing to opening the file & took that with a pinch of salt. 5 seconds!? Right. And the fact that this was both the cheapest winmail.dat opener & had only 1 review made me doubtful but at $1.99 I thought “What the heck!”. Well that other reviewer was right - this downloaded & then worked beautifully in a matter of seconds. If only all apps worked this well.

AMAZING

I hate the winmail.dat issue, super frustrating. This literally worked in 3 seconds. Now all of my winmail.dat files that come through email show up as Winmail Reader files and open up with one click. No dragging or dropping or anything. So good. Thank you

Success at last!

I tried all the free apps searching for an app to open .dat files with outlook .ics calendar invites but to no avail. This is the cheapest out there and does the job nicely. I can see the .ics file and allows me to view it from iPhone 5 iOS8 and accept invitations into my calendar. Great.

Fast and Easy

After getting a .dat file in the mail. I couldn’t figure out how to open it. I searched, and searched, and searched and couldn’t figure it out until I purchased and downloaded this app. It automatically installed and I double clicked on the .dat file and BOOM! it was opened. Thanks.

Surprised

Got it, figured it out in seconds and it works perfectly. The best thing is it doesn’t try to interface with apple mail (mine isn’t working). Other apps (like letter opener) try to open mail when looking at win mail file.
